Americans facing the phenomenon of “burglary tourism”

The operation usually takes no more than ten minutes. A small group enters a luxurious property after dark. Individuals know exactly which room to target, the one where the safe is located. In a matter of moments, they break the windows, tear the safe from the wall and drag it out of the house. Through investigations, law enforcement discovered that these gangs are all from Chile and entered the United States legally on tourist visas. This phenomenon is called “burglary tourism”.

These attacks are prepared days in advance and make police work complicated. It is also difficult to identify the members of these commandos. They entered the United States legally. Chile, which has an agreement with the United States, allows its nationals to benefit from a 90-day visa for tourism. Gangs therefore use this legal entry point into the United States.
