“Cute, let’s see if the rose…” said the poet Ronsard. The juries of the Nyon international new rose competition could complete the formula as follows: “Let’s go and see who is the most beautiful and who deserves the title!” This Saturday the 5th edition of this floral competition was held. The big winner, who was awarded the title of Golden Rose of Nyon but also the Apprentice Prize, comes from Germany. This is a Hybrid tea, Marzipan, from the breeder Kordes Rosen. It stood out for its “fabulous vanilla color on shiny, dark foliage with coppery young shoots”.

The Perfume Cup was awarded to the Hybrid tea rose, Perugino, from Roses Orard Sélection Edition (ROSE), in France, whose “fruity scent is reminiscent of lychee, lemon and blackcurrant”, according to the judges. Finally, it was the “gourmet” scents reminiscent of blackcurrant, lemongrass and Earl Gray tea that enabled the Hybrid tea, Deep Secret, from the breeder Rosen Tantau (Germany), to win the Cup prize. at the heart of perfumes.

In all, no less than 63 rose bushes were in the running. They were created by 24 breeders from twelve countries, namely Switzerland, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Denmark, Poland but also South Africa, New Zealand, United States, China and Japan.

Particularity, and not the least: “These new varieties have not been subject to any chemical or biological treatment,” specified the organizers. Fungicides and pesticides are banned from the competition. Only pruning, watering and mulching are permitted. Housed since 2023 in a rose garden specially designed for the competition, the rose bushes are maintained by the Environment Department. “The jurors were impressed by the exceptional state of health of the rose bushes presented. They indeed withstood the unfavorable conditions (cold and heavy rain) this spring remarkably well.”

Now that the jury, made up of around fifty members and chaired by the treasurer of the World Federation of Rose Societies, Sushil Prakash – who came specially from India – has delivered its verdict, the general public is invited to discover these new varieties on Friday June 21 and Saturday June 22 during the open days of the Bois-Bougy rose garden, in Nyon, then during the summer with free access, from Monday to Friday.
