A half-millimeter spider, a hawk about to bite a butterfly, a weasel that seems to be doing karate… From the most prestigious natural photography competition in the world, these breathtaking photos can be discovered at Basel Natural History Museum.

The photos presented since this Friday in a exhibition to discover at the Basel Natural History Museum are a selection made from 60,000 photos submitted to the Wildlife Photographer of the Yearthe most prestigious nature photography competition in the world.

“You don’t need to go to South America or Africa to photograph interesting animals! Nature is beautiful all around us, even in cities and parks. My daughters have taken up photography too . I hope it will motivate them to appreciate the nature that surrounds us,” Jiří Hřebíček, one of the winners of the competition, testified on Friday on RTS 7:30 p.m.

A citizen of Basel, he won first prize in the “Nature art” category with a crow immortalized in a city park where he used to take his two daughters.

Photographers, advocates of nature

“The idea of the exhibition is that photographers are advocates for nature. They show that we must protect nature,” explains Anna Pevzner, the curator of the exhibition, who continues: “This exhibition shows a combination of art and science photographs.

One of the aims pursued by the exhibition is also to encourage vocations. Since the creation of the competition 60 years ago, this is the sixth time that it has been presented in Basel, on loan from the Natural History Museum in London.

Boosted number of inputs

The reputation of this competition also has an effect on the entries. On display until June 29, 2025, the exhibition should enable the Basel Natural History Museum to attract 15,000 additional visitors compared to a standard year.
