Doubs. Fatal brawl in Morteau, suspect in police custody

The calm that usually reigns in Morteau was broken during the night from Wednesday to Thursday. It was shortly after 1 a.m. that firefighters were dispatched to rue Fauche for a brawl on the public highway.

When they arrived on the scene, they had to take care of a 60-year-old man in cardio-respiratory arrest. Despite the efforts of the emergency services and the intervention of the SAMU, the sixty-year-old could not be saved. Also present on site, the gendarmerie opened an investigation to try to clarify the circumstances of this tragedy.

A 21-year-old young man was arrested and taken into police custody. According to the first elements collected by the gendarmes, the victim was severely beaten. A surge of violence “clearly at the origin of the death of the 60-year-old man”, specifies the public prosecutor of Besançon, Etienne Manteaux

The two men had a “family-related” dispute, added the magistrate, and had just spent “part of the evening” together. The suspect was heavily intoxicated at the time of his arrest. An autopsy will be carried out to detail the injuries causing death. Already convicted of violence, the accused was also to be tried for other offenses in November.

A witness reports what she heard

“I heard shots 10 or 15 times. I wondered if they were breaking up a car, in fact, it was kicking,” reports a resident of rue Fauche, where the fatal brawl took place. “According to my neighbor, he said: ‘I’m sorry’. I didn’t dare raise my shutter, because I was afraid.”
