Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Tuesday the dismissal of his Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, citing a “breakdown of trust” in the midst of the war against Hamas.
In an official statement, Netanyahu explained that “significant differences” had emerged in recent months in the management of the conflict, stressing that these disagreements had ended up being made public “inappropriately” and had even “benefited the enemy”.
To replace Gallant, the prime minister named Israel Katz, current foreign minister, touting his “significant experience” and “ability to execute.” Netanyahu stressed that Katz had already proven his national security skills through his various ministerial posts.
At the same time, Netanyahu offered the post of foreign minister to Gideon Saar, asking him to join the coalition with his party. This appointment would aim to strengthen the stability of the government in times of war. This major reshuffle comes in a particularly tense context, as Israel continues its offensive in Gaza and faces growing threats on several fronts. Netanyahu stressed the need for “harmony” within the war cabinet to achieve “total victory.”
