Lhe “Dana”, an isolated high-altitude depression that causes sudden and violent rains, is the cause of the floods that hit various regions of Spain last week, causing at least 217 deaths and the disappearance of many people.

Valencia and its surroundings were particularly affected. The city of Tarragona, near Barcelona, was hit by heavy rain which resulted in flooding on Sunday evening.

An orange alert is in place in Barcelona, with possible precipitation exceeding 100 liters per square meter during the day, says the newspaper El Periódico. Authorities are asking residents to take precautionary measures, avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from rivers and cliffs.

At Barcelona airport, numerous videos relayed on social networks show a delicate situation. Travelers wade through several centimeters of water, while leaks are noted here and there in the ceilings.

At 12:20 p.m., the airport operator, Aena, announced on the social network X that airlines had already canceled around fifty flights from the airport. Seventeen flights were also rerouted to other airports.
