Irregular migration: 108 people rescued at sea off the Canary Islands

Coming from Mauritania, 108 migrants were rescued aboard two boats in the waters near the Canary Islands, according to information provided by Salvamento Marítimo.

Early this Wednesday morning, 72 people, including two minors, were rescued while on board a Mauritanian cayuco. The detection of this boat was carried out by the Integrated External Surveillance System (SIVE), while it was sailing approximately 20.4 kilometers south of Gran Canaria. A maritime rescue spokeswoman confirmed the incident to the EFE agency.

The Guardamar Talía, a maritime rescue ship, picked up the migrants and transported them to the Arguineguín dock, located in the southwest of Gran Canaria, where they arrived around 4:30 a.m.

At the same time, the day before, Tuesday June 4, 66 other people were also rescued and reached the Canary Islands, more precisely La Gomera and Tenerife. Among them were four children and five women.

These rescue operations once again highlight the ongoing migration crisis in this region of the Atlantic Ocean, where many migrants attempt the perilous crossing to the Canary Islands, often in search of better living conditions in Europe.

Local authorities and relief agencies continue to work around the clock to respond to these emergencies and provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in distress.
