The Spanish town of Massanassa (Valencia) is a municipality of 9,000 inhabitants. Until Friday November 1, it was almost cut off from the world due to the deadly floods which affected the south-east of Spain. On site, local residents have the feeling of having been abandoned.
After four days of trying to empty the streets, the thick layer of mud seems to stagnate in the town of Massanassa. Spread across the city, hundreds of people work all day, yet nothing seems to ease the distress among some residents. “As much as we clean, I still have nothing left in my house. I tell myself that we will get through this, but for the moment, it’s very complicated”laments a local resident hard hit by the devastating floods.
For only 24 hours, a few trucks have finally been able to enter the town of Massanassa. The movement of their vehicles through the muddy and rubble-strewn streets is slow and difficult. Streets that still need to be cleared. The hundreds of volunteers present there interfere, at times, with the smooth running of the work of the people responsible for clearing. For the moment, all energy is being devoted to rebuilding the city, but the trauma of the inhabitants may take longer to overcome.
