A Brazilian teenager killed his parents before setting their bodies on fire in Rio de Janeiro, local police announced Friday, less than a week after a similar incident in São Paulo.

The Rio military police say they “found two charred bodies” during the night from Thursday to Friday, at the home of the 16-year-old teenager, who was brought to the police station. He was “arrested in flagrante delicto”, according to the homicide division, which opened an investigation “to clarify the facts and the motivation for the assassinations”.

According to several local media, the teenager, who was adopted by the victims in 2014, killed his parents with a hammer. He then left his house to go eat with a friend. On his return, he set fire to the room where his parents’ bodies were located, before calling the firefighters and the police, these media report.

Similar triple homicide in São Paulo

According to the G1 news site, the teenager told the police that he had argued with his father and mother because they had not accepted that he was absent from school to “rest before a jiu-jitsu class.

Earlier this week, Brazil was shocked by the revelation of a triple homicide committed by another 16-year-old teenager, who shot his adoptive parents and his sister to death in São Paulo.

As in the news item in Rio, “the police were called by the teenager himself, who confessed to the crime,” local authorities said. The victims were killed with the service weapon of his father, a 57-year-old municipal police officer.

Private telephone

The facts took place on May 17, but they were only revealed last Monday, the teenager having stayed with the bodies for three days before calling the police.

During this time, he had gone to a gym and shopped at a bakery. He told the police that he stabbed his mother’s body “in rage” last Saturday, the day after the triple homicide.

The commissioner in charge of the investigation, Roberto Afonso, explained on local television that the teenager had felt “very frustrated” after being deprived of his mobile phone by his parents following an argument.

Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world, with a homicide rate of 23.4 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2022, according to the most recent data from the NGO Public Security Forum.
