Tehran would be ready to negotiate with Paris for a ceasefire in Lebanon

The President of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Ghalibaf, suggested in an interview broadcast Thursday by Le Figaro, that Tehran would be ready to negotiate with an application of UN Resolution 1701 which provides that only the Lebanese army can be deployed in Lebanon- South.

According to the French daily, Mr. Ghalibaf wants a ceasefire as quickly as possible in South Lebanon. To achieve this objective, the President of Parliament affirms that his country would be ready to concretely negotiate the measures for implementing 1701 with , which would act as a mediating country between Hezbollah and Israel.

United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted in August 2006, aims to end hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, strengthening the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and calling for the disarmament of the groups armed outside the Lebanese forces.

Mohammad Ghalibaf also defended the Iranian ballistic missile strikes on Israel on October 1. That day, Tehran launched more than 180 ballistic missiles against Israel, in particular in response to the assassination, on September 27, of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, and that on July 31 of Ismaïl Haniyé, political leader of Hamas.

“History has taught us that the Zionist regime only understands the language of force. He attacked our diplomatic representation in Syria, martyring several senior Iranian officials. Despite our response of April 13, 2024, he did it again, by assassinating, in the middle of Tehran, the leader of Hamas Ismaïl Haniyé, while he was our host for an official ceremony. If we did not respond, this Zionist regime would continue to attack us! “, he stressed.

On April 13, in response to a deadly strike attributed to Israel on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Iran fired some 350 explosive drones and missiles towards Israel, the first direct attack of its kind, dubbed “Honest Promise”. Most of the missiles had been intercepted by Israel with the help of foreign countries, especially the United States.

As a reminder, before going to Geneva, from where he gave his interview to Le Figaro, the President of the Iranian Parliament came to Beirut last Saturday by himself piloting the plane which landed at Beirut airport. He then met several Lebanese officials including outgoing Prime Minister Nagib Mikati and the Speaker of the House, Nabih Berry.
