Road authorities are increasing their vigilance to reduce incidents between motorists. Between new sanctions and the arrival of other signals, regulations continue to change. In particular, you must pay attention to this measure, which has been mandatory since last July! Drivers will use it for a better response in the event of an incident.
Motorists must use these new lights
Many car manufacturers had already thought about installing these lights on their vehicles. But until then, it was not an obligation for motorists to have them. In fact, driving a car that does not have one is not an offense. But from now on, this will change since these lights are compulsory! The manufacturers have also the obligation to put it on their product.
This device which has become obligatory is none other than the rear lights of the car ! They are part of the devices that the European Union makes compulsory in its “General Vehicle Safety Regulation” strategy. This should then allow motorists to have another secure tool for their vehicle. Its operation could also allow better protection for all road users.
From now on, all new vehicles on sale in Europe must therefore have these rear lights. Motorists will particularly appreciate their use on highways. Like signaling, understanding how it works helps increase driver vigilance in the event of an incident.

How do the lights in question work?
We’ve all seen these taillights at least once on the road. Many vehicles already have them, to the delight of motorists. They are primarily used to indicate that the car in front of you brake following an emergency situation. This could be a pedestrian suddenly crossing or a risk of collision for example.
So, when the car is traveling at more than 50 km/h and motorists stop suddenly, the rear lights turn on automatically. This comes from the anti-lock wheel system which is activated on its side. The drivers behind then understand that they must slow down and be careful since there may be an obstacle in front of them.
Note that the rear lights do not come on if motorists apply normal braking. These signals are quick to detect and give drivers the incentive to take the necessary action!
What are the benefits for motorists?
Chain accidents have become more and more numerous in recent years. In 2022 alone, for example, road authorities counted 1,867 incidents of this type. As for rear-end collisions, the number stands at 7,084 incidents. A total of 15% on all road accidents. That’s the whole purpose of these lights.
In addition to taillights, new cars circulating in Europe must now have other tools. This includes, for example, the obstacle detector or the fatigue warning. These tools make driving safer and aim to reduce the risk of incidents in the long term. Please note that only new cars have this obligation!
