Seven electricians were electrocuted, Yoor Yoor reported on Friday, while trying to replace an old electricity pole in Kerr Galo, in the North Bank region.

According to some Gambian media, the electricians are NAWEC employees. However, Pierre Sylva, the company’s public relations manager, told The Voice newspaper that the victims worked for a company called KEI, subcontracted by Gambia Electricals as part of a project financed by the World Bank and supervised by NAWEC.

Buba Badjie, NAWEC communications officer, also clarified that the deceased were not direct employees of NAWEC, but rather subcontracted workers. A NAWEC emergency coordination team was dispatched to the scene to assess the situation. Barra police also reported that they had received an alert regarding “an incident in Kerr Galo involving seven suspected NAWEC employees, who were believed to have died following electrocution while working on a power pole.”
