Two police officers were seriously injured by gunshot Thursday evening in a police station in the south of Paris by a man who grabbed an officer’s weapon, after being arrested for the attack with a box cutter on a woman.

The events took place shortly before 10:30 p.m. inside the police station, according to a Source close to the case who specified that one of the two police officers was in serious danger. What the Paris prosecutor’s office, requested by AFP, later confirmed.

The Paris police chief, Laurent Nuñez, went to the scene around midnight. He explained to the press that the assailant had been arrested around 10 p.m. in a building in a southern district of Paris for a “very violent attack on a woman” with a “cutter”. “The police intervened and brought him back here (to the police station) and it was when he was picked up that he stole the weapon” from an officer and “seriously” injured two police officers.

The latter were immediately transported to hospital, as was the attacker, who was also “seriously” injured by return fire, detailed Mr. Nuñez.

The Paris prosecutor’s office explained to AFP that three investigations had been opened: for “attempted murder of the woman”, for “attempted murder of persons holding public authority” as well as a third, entrusted to the “police of police” (IGPN), for “voluntary violence with weapons by a person holding public authority”.

This last type of investigation is always carried out when a police officer uses his weapon. The prosecution added that the accused, “injured in the chest, had been taken to hospital”, without his vital prognosis being compromised. Shootings occurring within the premises of a police station are extremely rare in France.
