The US House of Representatives on Wednesday overwhelmingly rejected impeachment proceedings against its President, Mike Johnson.

Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, was able to retain his position thanks in part to the support of Democrats. During the vote, 359 deputies rejected the eviction procedure, which received the support of 43 parliamentarians.

The president of the lower house of Congress attracted the wrath of the hard wing of his party after supporting an aid program for Ukraine.

The procedure, launched by Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, illustrates the deep divisions within the Republican Party.

Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said his party’s decision to endorse Johnson is part of ” of our commitment to solving Americans’ problems in a bipartisan way“.

For his part, the president of the lower house affirmed, after the vote, that the country needed a “ Functional Congress“, calling the impeachment proceedings a diversion.

Johnson added that his priority was to maintain the Republican majority in the House of Representatives and win more seats in the November election.

The radical wing of the Republican Party was opposed to the adoption of an aid program for Ukraine and conditioned the approval of this aid on a tightening of migration policy.
