Mohammed Ahmed Ali, commander of the Hamas naval unit in Gaza City, was killed in an airstrike on Wednesday, the army said in a statement.

The Palestinian Islamist group did not immediately comment on this announcement.

According to sources within Hamas, he belongs to its armed wing, the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades.

The Israeli army presents it in its press release as “responsible for attacks on Israeli territory and against the ground troops of the Israeli army operating in the Gaza Strip”, including in the center of the small Palestinian territory last week .

The Qassam brigades regularly launch rockets towards Israeli territory and claimed responsibility for shooting on Sunday towards the Kerem Shalom crossing point between Israel and Gaza, which killed four soldiers.

The war broke out on October 7 when Hamas commandos infiltrated from the Gaza Strip carried out an attack by air, sea and land against Israel, unprecedented in the history of this country. It led to the death of more than 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP report based on official Israeli data.

More than 250 people have been kidnapped and 128 remain captive in Gaza, of whom 36 are believed to have died, according to the Israeli army.

In response, the Israeli army launched an offensive that has killed 34,844 people so far, according to the Hamas Health Ministry.
