Morocco is among the main African countries from which migrants leave – Telquel.ma

SAccording to this report, Morocco, along with other countries such as South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Mali, is among the leading countries transmitters of migratory flows on the continent.

In terms of receipt of funds, Morocco is positioned in the top 20 in the world, having accumulated more than $11 billion in 2022, representing 8% of its GDP. This figure illustrates the significant importance of remittances compared to foreign direct investment, especially in developing countries.

The report also highlights internal challenges, including mass displacement caused by natural disasters like droughts and wildfires, which forced 9,500 people from their homes in northern Morocco in 2022.

Concerning migratory routes, the IOM document indicates that the route from Morocco to Spain is particularly perilous. He also notes that irregular migration to Europe is often done via sea routes that run from North Africa and the Middle East to Italy, or from West Africa to the Canary Islands.

Finally, the report reveals that nearly 2,800 people died or disappeared in 2022 during these perilous crossings, along the central Mediterranean route, the Atlantic route to West Africa, the route to Western Mediterranean and other West and Central African routes.
