The Free University of Brussels (ULB) will file a complaint following violence that occurred Tuesday evening against a security guard and a student in the context of the occupation by students of a building on the campus of the Solbosch, the university administration told Belga on Wednesday.
Tensions arose Tuesday evening on the K plain, opposite building B of the Solbosch campus, occupied by around a hundred students since Tuesday morning in order to denounce “the ongoing genocide in Gaza”.
According to Martin, a student member of the occupation present at the time of the altercation, several people arrived Tuesday evening with Israeli flags around their necks. “At the sight of these flags, some occupiers became angry – including a Palestinian who said he had lost his mother in the bombings in Gaza a few weeks earlier”explains the student. “He then tried to tear down the flag by grabbing the neck of one of the people.”
The co-president of the Union of Jewish Students of Belgium (UEJB), Gad Deshayes, contacted by Belga on Tuesday evening, for his part claimed to have been attacked and injured in the neck, before adding that he had spoken with the police. During the tensions, a security member was also injured while trying to control the violent individual.
The ULB has confirmed that it will carry “also complaint for the violence to which his security manager was subjected on Tuesday evening”. In the morning, rector Annemie Schaus declared on La Première (RTBF) that complaints will be filed following violent acts, particularly against Gad Deshayes.
A general assembly is planned for 12:30 p.m. within the student occupation, in particular with a view to discussing the altercation. “This violent behavior in no way represents our movement. It has been repeated several times and voted at previous general meetings that no violent behavior or act would be permitted”concluded Martin.
