Ukraine: armed with machine guns, new drones could give kyiv a considerable advantage against the Russians

The war between Ukraine and Russia is increasingly being played out in the air. On each side, drones have become major weapons, allowing localized damage to be done more stealthily than with missiles.

In early April, the Ukrainian military stunned the world by using Soviet-era aircraft and World War I technique to shoot down Russian drones. But these strategies from another time could soon be ancient history.

New drones, equipped by default with a machine gun, could be sent to the Ukrainian army in the coming weeks, reports Newsweek. Behind these machines is the American company Feloni Aero. It has just announced the marketing of two new drone models: FelonX and Felon 1.0.

Weapons used in the war in Ukraine

According to the terms used by the company, the Felon 1.0 is “the revolutionary fusion between superiority in the air and lethal precision intended for military and police uses”. Under its propellers, the drone is in fact equipped with an automatic weapon with a 5.56 mm caliber.

These new drones have a built-in ability to detect other flying objects

With such a weapon actually on board the drone, this new tool would allow those who hold it to aim very precisely at distant targets. But it does not stop there. Because FelonX and Felon 1.0 can also carry explosive charges and are, their designers explain, boosted with artificial intelligence to detect anti-drone devices. Qualities that make them very powerful weapons.

To detect other drones and any flying objects that could cause them harm, those developed by Feloni Aero use advanced Ondemm (or MmWave) technology. This non-contact radar technology makes it possible to detect other devices with great precision and communicate the information to the command center for a very rapid response, notes Defense Industry EU.

The US government has yet to give its approval for the delivery of drones

The Feloni Aero company hopes to be chosen as part of the $61 billion budget package allocated to Ukrainian aid and voted on in the US Congress in April, after several months of discussions. It is up to the Pentagon, the American Department of Defense, to decide whether or not to include FelonX and Felon 1.0 drones in these new shipments of military equipment.

The acquisition of these new weapons would further intensify the air battles and bombings which, on each side, cause considerable damage. On May 4, AP News published images of Ocheretyne, a Ukrainian village in the Donetsk region, in ruins following a Russian drone raid. The approximately 3,000 residents were forced to flee on foot.
