French President Emmanuel Macron thanked his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on Monday for not imposing “provisional” customs taxes on French cognac, after offering him bottles of it during his state visit to France.

“I also thank the president for his openness regarding the provisional measures on French cognac and his wish not to see them applied,” said the French head of state to the press, alongside the Chinese number one, at the end of their face-to-face interview in Paris.

French cognac is the subject of an anti-dumping investigation launched by Chinese authorities. According to a French diplomatic Source, China has indicated that there will be no immediate customs duties as a precautionary measure, pending the outcome of the investigation.

According to a list of gifts given to the Chinese president, consulted by AFP, these gifts include a bottle of Hennessy XO Cognac and a carafe of “Louis XIII” Cognac from Maison Rémy Martin.

In addition to these spirits, Emmanuel Macron also offered Xi Jinping works by Victor Hugo, as well as the first Franco-Chinese dictionary, published in 1742, and a vase “flattened on two sides, sculpted, in multilayer glass”, from an Amboise glassworks.
