As the Anglo-Saxons say with a touch of irony, it is the elephant in the room: the responsibility of Donald Trump in the assault on the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Since the indictment of the ex-president last year by special prosecutor Jack Smith, justice seemed to have stopped. In the electoral campaign which enters its last four weeks, the role played at this critical moment in American democracy by the former head of state has received very little attention.

However, Donald Trump’s responsibility for the events of January 6, 2021 which resulted in the assault on the Capitol by Trumpist supporters – which left several dead – appears overwhelmingly in a 165-page document unveiled on Wednesday by the special prosecutor. In the Trump camp, aware of the danger posed by these new revelations, the Mar-a-Lago mogul’s lawyers did everything, in vain, to block the publication of the document.
