Emmanuel Macron was preparing on Monday morning to receive Xi Jinping at the Elysée, who had arrived in France for a two-day state visit amid growing trade tensions between Europe and China.
The French president, who still hopes to position his country as a ‘balancing power’ in the Sino-American standoff, also intends to try again to convince his Chinese counterpart, a faithful ally of Russia, to contribute to the end of the war in Ukraine, even if the hope of a breakthrough remains modest.
The number one of the Asian superpower arrived in Paris on Sunday, returning to Europe for the first time since 2019.
He must be welcomed by Emmanuel Macron, flanked for the occasion by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen in order to display, as five years ago and last year in China, a united continental front on the issues commercial.
