Dhe still unknown DNA traces from the Dutroux case are at the Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) to be compared with traces in the Tanja Groen case, missing since 1993. This information was confirmed by the public prosecutor’s office (OM) of Maastricht, following articles published in the Dutch newspaper From Limburger.

The student disappeared on the night of August 31 to September 1, 1993, a party organized during the introductory week of the Circumflex student association in Maastricht. The student, then aged 18, was cycling to her room in Gronsveld, where she never arrived. Since then, all trace of her has disappeared.

About two years ago, the Netherlands asked Walloon judicial authorities to compare the traces with the Dutroux case. Traces of DNA and unknown hairs were notably found in houses and a car belonging to the Belgian serial killer. The cold case team wants to know if there is a link between the two cases by comparing the traces.

The spokesperson for the Maastricht public prosecutor’s office confirmed that the traces were handed over to the NFI for inventory. “After that, we will see what investigations are still possible,” she said. ” That takes time. It is impossible to say how long this will take. Any further investigation will also take time. She did not wish to say more.

It is not clear why the request for Dutch legal assistance took so long to be fulfilled. The prosecutor would not say anything about this.
