“The field of economy is one of the most important dimensions of relations between Turkey and the United States,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said.

Erdogan was speaking in New York on Monday at a roundtable with American and Turkish businessmen on the occasion of the 15th Turkish Investment Conference organized by the Turkish American Business Council (TAIK).

Erdogan arrived in New York on Saturday to attend the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. He held closed-door meetings with his counterparts and other senior officials. On Tuesday in New York, he will address the 79th session of the UN General Assembly.

Erdogan said that the US has been Turkey’s second largest export country and fifth largest import country for the past two years, adding that the bilateral trade volume has exceeded $30 billion in 2023.

He called on the various actors to work towards achieving the target of 100 billion dollars in their bilateral trade volume.

“To achieve this, unilateral practices such as additional tariffs in the iron, steel and aluminum sectors, CAATSA investigations and sanctions must be eliminated,” he said.

He deplored the restrictions imposed on cooperation in the field of the defence industry, which “unfortunately have not reached their potential” in recent years.

“We hope to have opened a new page with the F-16 (fighter jet) modernization project and hope that the export barriers in this area will be definitively lifted,” he stressed.

The Turkish president is counting on the support of the European Union to provide Turkish companies with the necessary facilities, particularly in terms of visas, to enter the American market.
