Ceasefire deal possible and necessary in Gaza, says Israeli opposition leader

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid on Monday called in Washington for a ceasefire deal in Gaza that would allow the hostages to be released, saying the “political interests must be put aside”. “I think all political interests should be put aside for this. It is much more important.”he told reporters after meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Blinken at the State Department.

“Israel needs the hostage deal… and no political process or political turbulence should affect the hostage deal. We must bring them home.”he added. “We will do whatever is necessary to ensure that there is an agreement on the hostages”Yair Lapid said again. “It is doable. We can make a deal on the hostages and we must make it.”.

Dead end

Former prime minister Yair Lapid has renewed his promise not to seek to overthrow Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. While denouncing Hamas, he said that Netanyahu’s government “should do more” to reach this agreement.

Since Israel announced on September 1 that Hamas had killed six hostages, including an American citizen, the Biden administration has further stepped up its efforts to obtain a truce in Gaza, without success so far. Negotiations between the mediating countries, the United States, Egypt and Qatar, remain at an impasse.
