It's winter, it's (very, very) cold… and in this weather we just want to stick our hands to a steaming mug and rush for some comfort food. To help you, we have prepared a selection of delicious coffee shops for you.
Imported from Anglo-Saxon countries (notably the United States and Australia), coffee shops are booming in the capital, popular for their specialty coffee and their warm atmosphere. The number of coffee shops has increased considerably (from 10 in 2012 to 200 in 2022 in Paris alone) and the sector represents a market of 34 million euros. Please note that we have decided to mix things up: some of the coffee shops presented will only serve coffee, while others will also serve as a canteen, bookstore, and even yoga studio!
- The Dancing Goat (Gambetta metro station). The most English of the coffee shops in the 20th arrondissement. With its large bay windows, this bright and cozy place offers a wide variety of drinks, from espresso to iced matcha lattes as well as delicious pastries that will delight your taste buds. 117 avenue Gambetta, Paris 20th, open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
- Café Pimpin (Ménilmontant metro station). With its raw and refined aesthetic, Café Pimpin is ideal for an inexpensive lunch (soup + quiche formula for 12 euros) or a weekend brunch. But you can also go there just to have a coffee or work in peace: a bar table includes sockets for computers. 17 rue des Panoyaux, Paris 20th. - Living Bread (Pelleport metro station). Known for its low glycemic index sourdough breads, did you know that Pane Vivo also has a coffee shop? Come and taste the best specialty coffees (which change regularly) but also lattes, matcha, chai, without forgetting the savory sandwiches made from its breads, of course. 49 rue de la Chine, Paris 20th, open Monday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Trombone (Buzenval metro station) Nestled in a quiet little street, this neighborhood coffee shop aims to create social connections. Open to workers, children and even dogs, it offers very good coffee, a demanding selection of tea as well as revisited classics of Lebanese cuisine (including Turkish eggs, or the Parisian ham with zaatar butter) . 69 rue des Haies Paris 20e, open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Benoit Castel (metro Gambetta or Pelleport). A true French coffee shop, the baker and pastry chef Benoît Castel offers, in addition to his traditional pastries and pastries, hot drinks and a breakfast served throughout the day based on savory or sweet pancakes. Two addresses in the 20th: a (small) old bakery with a large terrace in summer on rue Sorbier. A much more spacious room on rue de Ménilmontant which can accommodate large tables. On weekends, it's all-you-can-eat and seasonal brunch, with quality products. - Bok bar (Belleville metro station). Bokbar means “book bar” in Swedish and that is exactly the concept of this coffeeshop which is both a café and a bookstore. On the coffee side, you can enjoy Swedish coffee, organic drinks and the famous Kanelbulle or Cardemomabulle, traditional cinnamon or cardamom buns. On the bookstore side, works by Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Swedish and Finnish authors abound on the shelves. - Coffee Moon (Ménilmontant metro station). Karen and Pierre, a Franco-Mexican couple behind the creation of Café Lune, welcome you to a warm and minimalist decor. The menu is almost exclusively vegetarian, made from local products, and is easily accompanied by an espresso (€1), a filter (€3) or a latte (€4). 57 rue de Ménilmontant, Paris 20th, open Friday, Monday and Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Horses (Jourdain/Belleville metro station). This trendy coffee shop with New York accents stands out with its steps at the entrance, lined with cushions. Inside, hip-hop atmosphere with music in the background, t-shirts for sale and vinyl records. On the menu are two specialties that you absolutely must try: the Edith (€5), in homage to Edith Piaf, a double espresso garnished with pistachio cream and milk, and the Pink Cucumber (€6) made with cucumber, mint, lemonade and hibiscus tea. 70 rue de Belleville, Paris 20th, open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Have it (Jordan metro station). Miliki, which means milk in Lingala, is a warm and kids-friendly coffeeshop where you can telework during the week, or come with your family on the weekend. The place is fully equipped to welcome your children: high chair, changing table and small table where children can draw. Don't miss their breakfast, a house specialty! 8 rue Levert, Paris 20th, open Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Candle Kids (Jordan metro station). This former dry cleaner transformed into a chic and minimalist café offers a nice selection of artisanal drinks, such as chai lattes or mountain honey lattes, and other sweets like banana bread, cinnamon rolls or honey madeleines. 107 rue des Couronnes, Paris 20th, open Wednesday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- That Aûm (Place des Fêtes metro station). This holistic coworking space combines coffee shop, grocery store, and wellness studio. You will have the opportunity to enjoy delicious vegetarian dishes, take a yoga or pilates class, and do your shopping at the grocery store which offers decorative, food and cosmetic products. 140 rue de Belleville, Paris 20th, open Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Four Hours (Ménilmontant metro station). Located in the heart of Ménilmontant, Quatre Heures is a pastry shop specializing in cookies: matcha, pistachio, praline, and more. Accompany this with a good coffee or hot chocolate, and that's it. Good to know: Quatre Heures offers brunches on weekends. 95 rue de Ménilmontant, Paris 20th, open Wednesday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Pilo's (Gambetta metro station). Pilo's is THE Argentinian tea room to know in Paris. Chef Pilar d'Amuri, nicknamed Pilo, concocts delicious pastries using dulce de leche, a sweet milk jam similar to caramel. And a wide range of drinks are added to the menu, from coffee to chocolate to mate cocido (mate brewed like tea). 1 avenue du Père Lachaise, Paris 20th, open Wednesday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Plural Café (Ménilmontant metro station). Drinking coffee while doing a good deed is possible! Meet at Plural, the one and only coffee shop in the 20th century to roast its own coffee. Here, specialty coffee is sold from 1 euro and other Latin American products are offered for sale, such as pandebono or empanadas. Since the coffee is imported from Colombia, the producers are paid their fair value. Plural is also a school that trains refugees as baristas, in order to promote their professional integration. 17 rue Julien Lacroix, Paris 20th, open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Monique and Blueberry (Pelleport metro station). Monique et Myrtille will delight fans of family cooking. The dishes are homemade and seasonal, with products from sustainable agriculture. The coffee is specialty. Service in a good mood guaranteed! 83 rue Orfila, Paris 20th, open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Chaize (Philippe Auguste metro station). Meet just a stone's throw from the Père Lachaise cemetery for this designer and minimalist coffeeshop, ideal for working in peace or leafing through one of the many magazines available to customers. The menu includes classics such as espresso, matcha, Americano, and sweet and savory specialties such as the focaccia sandwich. 24 Boulevard de Ménilmontant, Paris 20th, open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. (except Wednesday, closing at 5 p.m.) and Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Cantine Oummi (Gambetta metro station). Cantine Oummi aims to make healthy eating accessible to everyone, with the possibility of creating your own sandwiches and salads using products from organic farming. Note that the brand also has a tea room, grocery store, and offers weekend brunches. 14 avenue du Père Lachaise, Paris 20th, open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (note that it is closed on Wednesday), and Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Le Monte-en-l’air (Ménilmontant metro station). It’s the perfect spot to combine coffee and literature. The place includes an alternative bookstore with a cutting-edge, quality selection, a café area with a small terrace ideal for sunbathing, and even an art gallery. 2 rue de la Mare, Paris 20th, open Monday to Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- The 011 Café (Metro Gambetta/Ménilmontant). Defining itself as a sociable and cultural place, 011 Café offers a warm and pleasant setting where you can enjoy hot drinks and sensational cookies, attend an exhibition, or attend a concert or a creative workshop. 78 rue des Amandiers, Paris 20th, open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- A child. The latest coffee shop in the 20th arrondissement of Paris is dedicated to families. Opened on January 11, 2025, it intends to respond to the lack of places to eat suitable for young children and thus fight against the isolation of parents.
