For several days, the trailer for Sylvester Stallone’s next film has been making the rounds on social networks in its French version. But not for a good reason. In fact, the video is widely mocked and criticized for the poor quality of its dubbing.
For good reason: the actor’s voice was dubbed by artificial intelligence, following the death of his historical voice actor. All for an absolutely catastrophic result.
Alain Dorval’s voice, digitally recreated
Died on February 13, 2024, Alain Dorval was an actor mainly known for his great qualities as a voice actor. Since the beginning of the 1970s, he has lent his voice to Sylvester Stallone for no less than 48 feature films.
Upon his death, the actor’s family and a company specializing in AI, Eleven Labs, entered into an agreement to “recreate” his voice digitally. “We wanted to do something that honors the know-how and legacy of my father,” explained Aurore Bergé, the current minister responsible for Equality between women and men and the fight against Discrimination, and daughter of Alain Dorval at Variety.
“There is a huge difference between artificially creating a new voice – something my father was strongly opposed to – and bringing back to life an actor whose voice is deeply anchored in our collective imagination,” she explains.
A result that makes Internet users bristle
“Armor”, the next feature film with Sylvester Stallone, will be broadcast on the Prime Video platform in March 2025. A first test trailer, with the voice recreated by artificial intelligence, has been released. And the result seems simply crude, almost parodic.
-A fact widely denounced by Internet users on X, the latter not hiding their anger. “Using artificial intelligence to recreate the voice of Alain Dorval is an insult to his memory and to the entire profession of dubbing”, we can read in particular on the platform.
“It’s not at all natural”, “It’s a shame”, “It’s catastrophic”… And above all, an almost unanimous opinion: “On an ethical level, it’s disgusting, but the result is just as much.”
Faced with criticism, Aurore Bergé however reacted on Twitter by affirming: “I gave my agreement for a test. Only a test. An agreement strictly guaranteeing me that my mother and I would be in final validation before any use/publication . And that nothing could be done without our agreement. I discover… on X that this commitment is not respected. I never validated such a broadcast. state.”
Things could therefore change between now and the release of the feature film.
