Should you watch this episode of the new season 9 of the police series broadcast this Sunday, September 15, 2024? Our opinion

Sunday September 15 marks the grand return of the enjoyable New Zealand police series Brokenwoodwhich returns to France 3 with the new season 9. Our opinion on the first episode, Brokenwood: the musical.

This Sunday, September 15, France 3 broadcasts the first episode of the new season 9 of the police series Brokenwood. Nearly a year after leaving Commissioner Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea), Captain Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland) and Lieutenant Daniel Chalmers (Jarod Rawiri) at the heart of incredible investigations, we find the trio on improbable crime scenes in the small town of Brokenwood, to lead the investigation, with the invaluable help of the atypical coroner Gina Kadinsky (Cristina Ionda) in the magnificent and wild landscapes of New Zealand. At the heart of this small town where everyone knows each other, crimes continue to disturb the tranquility of its small community. And to start this ninth chapter, it is a murder in music that New Zealand fiction offers us.

Brokenwood : What is the first episode of the new season 9 of the police comedy on France 3 about?

Still in the spotlight, the picturesque New Zealand village of Brokenwood hosts a show that traces its entire history in song. On the night of the opening night of this musical, music-loving Commissioner Mike Shepherd is surprised to run into his colleagues, Captain Kristin Sims and coroner Gina Kadinsky before entering the theater. With her legendary talent for persuasion, Gina has managed to convince a reluctant Kristin to make the trip. On stage, the artists in spectacular costumes sing their hearts out, but in the middle of the performance, a spotlight falls on the head of an actor who dies instantly. Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea), Lieutenants Sims and Chalmers quickly abandon the theory of an accident. As their investigation progresses, they discover that tensions and rivalries were brewing within the troupe. The suspects multiply, each with a motive for wanting the actor’s disappearance.

Brokenwood : Should you watch the first episode of season 9 of the police comedy on France 3?

After nine seasons, we never tire of the good-natured humor of this unpretentious and uniquely charming fiction. And this first episode plays the humor card to the fullest with this brilliant idea of a musical comedy, with song lyrics reconstructing the story of Brokenwood. Of course, the plot will end like all the others, with the murderer’s confession, in the meantime there will have been multiple false leads and many touches of humor. This police series does not renew the genre but it is particularly pleasant to watch especially since we have become attached to the gallery of secondary characters that we have gotten to know over the course of the eight previous seasons. We will notably mention the colorful “Frodo” (Karl Willetts), or the irresistible coroner Gina (Cristina Serban Ionda), whose exchanges with Mike (Neill Rea) are always quite tasty. We still regret the absence of Nic Sampson, the interpreter of Sam Breen, whose character was really likeable and funny. His replacement Daniel Chalmers (Jarod Rawiri) is less charismatic and less funny, but these light investigations remain particularly entertaining.
