It’s hard to forget the intensity and madness of the American talk show Jerry Springer which aired for 27 seasons, from 1991 to 2018. It is precisely the secrets behind the chaos of the popular show that the two-episode Netflix documentary exposes.
Jerry Springer succeeded in dethroning Oprah
Dethroning Oprah, the queen of talk shows, was the ultimate goal of the producers of Jerry Springer. After achieving the unthinkable – which infuriated the host – Jerry Springer (who was worth 60 million at the end of his hosting career) and his team, however, found themselves under enormous pressure to stay at the top, whatever the cost. Hence the ever more provocative turn of the show.
Excerpts from the only episode to have been banned are revealed
Of the talk show’s total 3,891 episodes, only one never made it to television. One of the guests was a man who had left his wife and daughter to marry… his horse! Previously unseen clips show the animal joining the individual on stage, where the two share a kiss, shocking and disgusting people in the audience.

“If we could kill someone live on screen, I would,” says executive producer, Richard Dominick
Although the show was named after its star host, it was actually executive producer Richard Dominick who was the mastermind. It’s no exaggeration to say that the man – who was willing to do anything to boost ratings – is scary when he speaks on camera. “If we could kill someone live on screen, I would do it,” he goes so far as to declare.
The first battle was that of members of the KKK
The show at one point took a violent turn, which later became its trademark. The first of many fights to break out on set was between members of the Ku Klux Klan and members of the Jewish Defense League.

Man Believes His Mother’s Murder Is Due To Being On The Show
A woman who wanted to appear on the show was part of a love triangle with her ex-husband and his new flame. She is one of the only guests to have left the set in the middle of filming. She was murdered by her ex a few months later, and her son, who testifies in the documentary, still believes to this day that the tragedy was the fault of the production.

Behind-the-scenes wrongdoing
The documentary features footage of the producers “motivating” guests behind the scenes before they entered the set. We had them practice what they were going to say and how to deliver it. Instructions and insults were shouted at them to put them in a daze. Many of them had slept little the night before and had been greeted with a lot of alcohol in an attempt to make them vulnerable before their interview.
Jerry Springer categorically refused that the show was rigged
Many believe that the battles, improbable subjects and interviews with these larger-than-life participants were faked. However, this was not the case, Jerry Springer categorically refusing fraud on his set. He actually burst into anger the day two evil guests simulated a fight on the air.
– Host Jerry Springer died in April 2023 in Chicago, where his famous show was filmed. The documentary Jerry Springer: silence, motor and altercations can be found on Netflix.
