The left and far-right oppositions reaffirmed on Tuesday their desire to censor the government of Michel Barnier, who believes he has done the maximum to satisfy the political forces in Parliament.
The French Prime Minister on Monday held his government responsible for adopting the draft Social Security budget (PLFSS) without a vote.
The last minute renunciation of the drug delisting project in 2025, which aimed to convince the National Rally (RN) not to turn to censorship, will not have been enough. The RN also demanded the abandonment of the deindexation of pensions to inflation from January 1, which it did not obtain.
The New Popular Front (NFP) and the RN then tabled motions of censure against the government of Michel Barnier, which will be debated on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. for a vote around 7:00 p.m., reported BFM TV.
“We have reached the end of the dialogue, we have done the maximum so that the political forces of Parliament can support us,” declared Tuesday the French Minister of the Economy, Antoine Armand, on France 2, adding that the deputies had the choice “not to plunge the country into uncertainty”.
Laurent Saint-Martin, the Minister of Budget and Public Accounts, also declared on RTL on Tuesday that the executive had always been open to negotiation.
“We are open to dialogue from the beginning to the end. What I observe is that I see clearly that now we are no longer in a dialogue on the other side. We are in permanent pretexts ” he said.
Marine Le Pen, the leader of the RN deputies in the National Assembly, affirmed on dangerous, unjust and punitive which, moreover, aggravates the already monstrous deficits of seven years of Macronism.”
Jean-Philippe Tanguy, RN deputy for the Somme, for his part reiterated his party's intention to vote in favor of the motion of censure against Michel Barnier that the presidents of the parliamentary groups of the New Popular Front announced they had tabled on Monday.
“We are sure (of voting for censorship) because it is our duty,” he said on Europe 1.
“There is no break with Macronism as we asked for,” he added.
For Marine Tondelier, national secretary of the Ecologists, one of the components of the New Popular Front (NFP), this situation is proof of the Barnier government's dependence on the far-right party.
“They put themselves in the hands of Marine Le Pen,” she said on franceinfo. “He will have censure and dishonor.”
Fears of a fall of Michel Barnier's government this week affected stock and bond markets in France, the euro zone's second-largest economy, already under pressure due to its deficit.
The spread between French and German yields – a measure of the premium investors demand to hold French debt – is moving to 84.6 basis points, after reaching 90 basis points on Monday, its highest level since 2012 .
Germany's 10-year yield, the benchmark for the euro zone, was up 3.3 basis points at 2.06%
Michel Barnier will grant an interview to TF1 and France 2 on Tuesday evening on the 8:00 p.m. news, the two channels announced, while the left-wing opposition and the National Rally promise to censor his government.
