Rebecca, you play Mia, a young woman with a strong character in The return of Anna Brodeur.
Mia works for PBLD, the public relations agency of Patrick Bernier (Benoit McGinnis), the best friend of Anna Brodeur (Julie Le Breton). Anna’s arrival in the company deeply disturbs her. Very attached to her principles, she considers that the fact that her boss hires Anna, who has no experience, is a free pass. She won’t hesitate to make him feel it. In reality, she is Anna’s nemesis. She will try to put obstacles in her way and make her understand that she is not welcome throughout the season.
Several viewers have gotten to know you in the role of Mylène Kirouac in Indefensible.
People would pass me in the street and ask me if it was really me who played this unstable girl. To play this character who falls in love with Inès (Nour Belkhiria) and keeps her captive in a room for several days, I immersed myself in the study of the mental illness from which she suffered: erotomania. This condition causes one to distort reality and become convinced that a person is in love with oneself. I tried to interpret this role with the greatest sincerity!
Tell us about your journey. Did you already know when you were young that you wanted to become an actress?
My parents enrolled me in a theater class in Mercier, in Montérégie, my hometown, when I was seven years old. It was love at first sight for acting, and from that moment on, I knew I wanted to become an actress. It’s my calling, and I haven’t stopped playing since.
How did you pursue this passion as a teenager?
I chose to study at Collège Jean-Eudes, which offers an excellent theater option. My sister also studied there, and our parents drove us there morning and evening, which is still an hour’s drive there and back… if all goes well. I am truly grateful to my parents for giving us this chance!
So you lived your passion to the fullest throughout your high school.
Exactly! From first to fifth secondary. At 15, I landed a small role at the Théâtre Prospero, where I had the opportunity to play in Blackbird alongside Gabriel Arcand.
Gabriel Arcand is a sacred monster of the theater… It was undoubtedly an enriching experience!
For me, Gabriel represents an emblematic figure in the development of my career. He generously told me how he built his career. He did not hesitate to travel to Poland to take lessons with Jerzy Grotowski in order to perfect his art.
So he strongly inspired you.
Enormously! Gabriel pushed me to leave as well. I decided to enroll in a Russian theater school. At 17, after high school, I went to Belarus to take a course for a whole year. It was an extremely intense school, with classes six days a week, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., including fencing, dancing, ballet… The teachers were masters, and the pedagogy, it was serious! We studied Stanislavski’s technique and performed plays by Chekhov. It was incredible training; I had the impression of experiencing four years of learning in a single year.
What did you do when you came back?
I prepared for my auditions to join a theater school. My goal was to join the National Theater School and I succeeded! I left school in 2016, and René Richard Cyr then invited me to work on Caligulaprecisely alongside Benoit McGinnis, with whom I share the screen in the series The return of Anna Brodeur. It’s a great reunion.
What’s coming up for you, what are your plans?
For now, everything is pretty open. I’m waiting to have auditions and opportunities to continue, because I love my job!
