This Thursday, January 9, 2025, Netflix put one of its biggest series projects of the year online. On the program? A return to the bloody origins of America with American Primeval (At the Dawn of America). And according to the creators, the violence on screen is taken from historical facts.
We do not know if, like Fallout on Prime Video or Halo on Paramount+, the video game Red Dead Redemption will one day have the right to a series adaptation, but At the dawn of America (American Primeval), currently on Netflix, is the closest thing to it.
Violence taken from a true story
Written by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) and directed by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights), this six-episode series takes place in 1857 and follows the territorial war in Utah (USA) as pioneers, native Americans and other Mormons embark on a terrible game of massacre to take possession of the American West.
And the least we can say is that the creative team did not arrive with the handbrake on. In order to depict the tragic reality of this period, the creators have instead staged acts of incredible violence where the worst in human beings takes shape. The craziest part of all this? Where episode 1 offers us one of the most shocking battles in the history of the series (alongside “The Battle of the Bastards” from Game of Thrones), this one… is taken from a true story.
