After a rather wise and conventional part 1, season 6 of Cobra Kai gave us something heavy with its part 2, posted online on November 15. And for good reason: Miyagi-Do students and senseis participated in the Sekai Taikai, the largest karate tournament in the world. Obviously, they ran into people who were stronger than them but, through determination and fights, managed to reach the semi-finals, even eliminating Cobra Kai in the process. There were many surprises in these five episodes, between the return of Terry Silver, the appearance of this character whose actor died years ago, or the return to the competition of the dojo led by Kreese and Kim Da- Eun. It is also on a scene that is both tragic and important that part 2 of the sixth season of Cobra Kai : while a general fight broke out during the competition, Kwon accidentally stabbed himself while retrieving Kreese's knife and died in front of the eyes of the public and the athletes. The creators explained this shocking death, which still causes so much discussion among Internet users.
Cobra Kai season 6: why Kwon's death marks a turning point in the series
Although not a main character, Kwon's death marks a turning point for Cobra Kai. Until now, the series had never killed a character during a fight, even if Miguel had not gone far in the second season with the confrontation in high school which had left him, for a time, in a wheelchair rolling. This time, the creators therefore decided to go further by killing the young member of the Cobra Kai dojo. A death that is debated: if some fans were shocked and saddened by this death, others believe that the character deserved it. Indeed, over the course of the season, Kwon revealed himself to be a formidable opponent, but also sometimes unsympathetic. In any case, he will be remembered as one of the great antagonists, despite his short time in the series.
Cobra Kai : Kwon's death is debated among Internet users
On social networks and on the Reddit forum, many Internet users expressed their feelings about this tragic moment in the series. “I'm so tired of people saying Kwon deserved this. I just want to tell them that they are ignoring the fact that he was just young and immature, just like Chozen was. LKwon's death is one of the saddest things in the series, because he was manipulated by Kreese and died because of it.“, wrote one user on Reddit, while another added: “Kwon was an asshole and it was satisfying to see him get his ass kicked but he didn't deserve to die“. “Kwon's death is sad and shocking, and I think it shows how impactful Kreese's tactics and his 'no mercy' slogan can be. Kreese was going to kill Silver and that's why he had that knife. Under Kreese's control, Cobra Kai was extremely toxic and all of the students' negative emotions were weaponized. Kwon's death is a sad return to reality,” confided another Internet user. But for some, this death was deserved, since Kwon wanted to attack Axel with the knife. In short, difficult for fans of Cobra Kai to agree!
Cobra Kai season 6: what impact will Kwon's death have in part 3?
The continuation of Cobra Kai should obviously show us the consequences of Kwon's death, as co-creator Josh Heald teased to the American site TVLine: “His death is an important moment and should have repercussions throughout the karate community.” Will the competition be canceled following this tragic death? In any case, it would be logical for the Sekai Taikai to end before crowning a winner… It remains to be seen what the last five episodes could tell, if this is indeed the option that is chosen by the writers.
