MEDIA – A leading position among continuous news channels for the month of June. According to figures from Médiamétrie published this Monday, July 1, CNews obtained an audience share (PDA) of 3.5% during the past month, once again ahead of BFMTV (3.4%). Last May, the channel surpassed BFMTV for the first time since its creation.

For CNews, this rise coincides with a busy media context, marked in particular by the campaign for the early legislative elections. The channel, owned by the Canal+ group under the control of Vivendi, headed by Vincent Bolloré, also takes the opportunity to highlight in a press release, a “historic monthly record” in terms of audience share, after reaching 2.8% in May.

CNews remains at the heart of controversies concerning its political and editorial positioning. Boycotted by many left-wing figures, the channel is accused of having affiliations with the far right, a label it rejects. This controversy is exacerbated by the candidacy for the legislative elections of two of its former columnists under the banner of the National Rally. At the head of their constituencies, Pierre Gentillet obtained 43% of the votes in Cher and Guillaume Bigot collected 38% in the Territoire de Belfort.

CNews defends its positioning and its pluralism

Guillaume Bigot defends the diversity of opinions expressed on the channel and believes that categorizing it would be too binary. “There are a lot of sensitivities” at CNews, he assured AFP before the first round. Serge Nedjar, general director of CNews, believes that CNews audiences are a reflection of French society. “We are a mirror of society. Our progress has been constant and has accelerated for several months”he declared in May.

In May, Arcom fined CNews €50,000 for comments made by journalist Geoffroy Lejeune that anti-Semitism and prison overcrowding were consequences of “Arab-Muslim immigration”.

Founded in 2017 after Vincent Bolloré took control of iTélé, CNews will defend its case as part of the relaunch of its TNT frequency on July 15 before Arcom, which is hearing all the candidates.
