This article is an updated version of the data survey published on March 13, 2024.
On November 13, the Regulatory Authority for Audiovisual and Digital Communication (Arcom) imposed two financial sanctions on the news channel CNews: 100,000 euros for presenting abortion as “the leading cause of mortality” during of a broadcast, on February 25, and 50,000 euros for having propagated and commented on false information on the provision of a prayer room during a school trip by a college of Pau, in September 2023.
These two sanctions are only the latest in a long series of breaches of obligations (pluralism of information, control of the channel, advertising, broadcasting, etc.) notified by Arcom to the two information channels of the Bolloré group, CNews and C8.
They come after Arcom's decision, in July, not to renew the authorization to broadcast C8 and NRJ12 on TNT following its numerous warnings, formal notices and fines for breaches of both chains to their obligations in recent years.
After reports from viewers, the audiovisual regulator, which took over from the Superior Audiovisual Council (CSA), can act in a graduated manner: a simple warning, a warning, possibly followed by a warning. in default and finally a financial penalty. In theory, suspending the broadcast of a program or service is possible, but has never happened. C8 and CNews are the only French channels to have been subject to financial sanctions.
According to a count made par The World, the two channels received at least 52 sanctions from Arcom and the CSA between December 2012 and November 2024, with a clear acceleration in their frequency over the past four years. Already sixteen decisions have been taken for 2024 alone.
Find below all of the decisions published by the CSA and Arcom against the channels C8 (formerly D8) and CNews. This spreadsheet will need to be completed if new sanctions are published.
