New union action by the VRT at the start of the Eurovision 2024 competition: “We condemn the violations of human rights by the State of Israel”

“The EBU (European Broadcasting Union) has clearly demonstrated that it has great difficulty in realizing its own values. By desperately clinging to the appearance of ‘apolitical’, it is taking a political stance. It is inherent in artists to “have an opinion and a vision of the world and the EBU silences these voices in order to keep the world and reality out of it,” ACOD-VRT and ACOD Cultuur said in a statement.

“The events of recent days are all the more bitter when we know that the Israeli main sponsor of the festival, ‘Moroccanoil’, and other sponsors see their power increase through the financing of the Eurovision song contest. ‘Apolitical festival’ is funded by an Israeli company, as is Israeli participation, is a clear political statement from the EBU.”

“None of this, however, should distract us from the heart of the problem: in our view, the State of Israel is committing genocide, committing serious violations of human rights, in defiance of international law and has caused 35,000 deaths since October, including 13,000 children,” the press release continued.

The unions are therefore calling on employees of other public channels to join the fight. “Call on your management to no longer participate in the Eurovision Song Contest if countries that do not respect human rights are allowed to participate,” we can still read. “We are calling on public broadcasters to take charge and transform the EBU into the values-driven organization it once stood for, without the constraints of private sponsorship.”

Finally, they call on the Israeli government to end the fighting and massacres, allow international observers, aid workers and the press to enter Gaza and negotiate a solution.
