A first book in a bookstore for first year students

First year students at Notre-Dame-du-Sourire primary school were proud on Monday to present the book they wrote and illustrated as part of writing workshops. Each of their stories will be available for nearly three weeks at the Le Kiosque du Quartier bookstore in Arvida.

The young authors were delighted to unveil their creation on which they had worked all year. Parents and even grandparents, around twenty people came for the unveiling of the books.

Parents were invited to the launch of the books which tell an anecdote that occurred in the children’s lives.

Even though the exhibition usually takes place in the school library, the group’s teacher took it a step further.

All the children formed a circle at the entrance to the business. Everyone presented their book and some even read it in front of everyone.

Mélanie Gagnon explained the entire writing process to the families. She also presented her sign used to teach children the steps of creating a story.

Former teacher and now owner of the bookstore Le Kiosk du Quartier, Valérie Potvin was not difficult to convince to participate in the project. She notes that encouraging young people to create a book with their own story leaves room for developing their skills.

Reading and writing is the most important pillar in the first cycle to promote academic success. I think that seeing that they can come to the neighborhood bookstore which is very close to their school, seeing all the books that we have, then feeling a sense of belonging to the bookstore since their book will staying here for a few weeks, I think it will just give them even more of a taste for reading and writing and marveling at this world mentioned Valérie Potvin.

The students had fun participating in the writing workshops. Many were able to give free rein to their creativity.

Juliette Dufour dreams of becoming a writer.

Many drew inspiration from their personal lives to put together their story. At the end of the group presentation, the children ran to their families to show off their authorial skills.

To see in their eyes all the wonder, the pride they have, it’s like it’s mission accomplished because I believe I’ve given them all the pleasure of writing and reading.

Since September, Mélanie Gagnon has kept everything written by her students. After reading their first story, the young writers quickly noticed the giant steps they had taken.
