True stories are popular and Netflix has understood this by offering in its catalog a lot of content inspired by real events. Latest, The Asunta affair. This Spanish production is based on one of the most famous criminal cases in Spain. The 6-episode miniseries created by Ramón Campos, Gema R. Neira, Jon de la Cuesta, and David Orea Arribas follows the murder of a young girl whose wealthy adoptive parents, the father (Tristán Ulloa, seen in season 3 of Narcos and in Berlinthe spin-off of the House of Paper) and the mother (Candela Peña seen in the series Hierro broadcast on Arte), are suspected of having murdered.

The Asunta affair, this Spanish mini-series is available on Netflix: do we watch or skip it?

Inspired by the murder of a little girl by her adoptive parents, The Asunta Affair comes in a 6-episode mini-series. If the criminal case is interesting, this fiction with its too dark staging and melodramatic interpretation has difficulty finding the right tone. But if it struggles most of the time to hang on, the moments which concern the reconstructions of the trial are truly captivating and all the more striking since particular care was taken in the choice of actors who resemble the real protagonists. We are particularly struck by the recreated photos of the young victim. In the end, this drama, which has too many lengths, would have benefited from being adapted with more finesse and having a little more punch in the unfolding of the plot, but the investigation and the trial compensate for these shortcomings.
