RESULTS. Indian Ocean Islands Games: silver in football, basketball and rugby, gold medals in karate and athletics (day 8)

Penultimate day of competition at the Indian Ocean Islands Games in Madagascar, this Saturday 2 September. wins silver medals in football, basketball and rugby. In volleyball, the Réunionnaises missed the bronze medal.

Nearly 460 athletes from the Reunion team took part in the 2023 Island Games in Madagascar. This Saturday, September 2 is the penultimate day of competitions.

With 234 medals, Reunion is third behind Madagascar and Mauritius (find our table here).

This Saturday evening, Madagascar won the football final (1-0) against Reunion in extra time and after a chaotic end to the match. Find here our article on the match.

This afternoon, during the small final, Mauritius beat the Comoros 2 to 0. Mauritius therefore leaves with the bronze medal in football.

In basketball, the Madagascans leave with the gold medal after having beaten the Reunion team 62 to 54. The Reunionese therefore end up in money on this basketball final.

Among the women, the Madagascans also beat the Réunionnaises 59 to 53. The Réunion basketball team also leaves with the silver medal. “We are disappointed, we still had positives, but we sinned in certain situations, and then the opponents and the organization were not easy”reacted the Reunionese coach at the end of the meeting. “We had prepared for these games, we had a good team, of course we are disappointed”, comments one of the players from Reunion.

In the rugby final, the Malagasy are in gold after beating the Reunionese 17 to 14. The rugby selection of Reunion therefore leaves with the silver medal.

In the small men’s final, the Mahorais lost 7 to 14 against Maurice who left with the bronze medal. In the men’s semi-finals, Reunion beat Mauritius 17-14, and Madagascar won over Mayotte.

On the women’s side, Reunion lost in the final to Madagascar, which crushed them 24 to 0. The Réunionnaises leave with the silver medal, Madagascar with gold. The Mahoraises win the bronze after their 20 to 5 victory against Mauritius. In the semi-finals, Reunion defeated Mayotte 12-7 and Madagascar crushed Mauritius 52-0.

Among the men, as among the women, the players from Reunion were physically limited after having been sick, for a good part of them, since their arrival in Madagascar at the end of last week.

In volleyball, the Réunionnaises missed the bronze medal by losing to Maurice in the small final. They lost 3 sets to 0 (25/16, 25/21, 25/20). The Mauritians dominated the meeting.

Despite a hung score, the Reunionese did not manage to take the advantage. They lacked intensity and aggressiveness, even if there were some good moves and a good technical level.

“It was very hard, reacts David Françoise, coach of the girls volleyball selection in Reunion. Our volleyball stayed in Reunion, we were never at our level. The bottom line was not there, yet we did everything for it, we trained. We will have to take stock, I have no explanation.

Reunionese Rock Baronne won the gold medal in men’s individual karate kata.

Among the women, Ludivine Zitambi wins the silver medal.

In team karate kata, the Réunionnaises won money, and the people of Reunion the bronze.

Qualified in all the finals Reunion leaves with only one gold medal in kata karate fight. As a team, the Reunionese lost in the final, and leave with the silver medal. Same result for the women’s karate combat team, the Réunionnaises leave with the silver medal.

In athletics, Réuninnais Kilian Daude shone in the 800m and he leaves with the gold medal.

In the women’s 800m, Emma Metro climbs to the third step of the podium and leaves with the bronze medal.

In the pole vault, the women achieve a double, with the gold medal for Julia Boslak and money for Moana Peyrard.

A double also in the girls’ high jump with gold for Esther Conde Turpin, and money for Emma Mounier.

In the men’s long jump, Yan Randrianasolo won the gold medal. In women’s discus, it’s the medal Golden also for Carine Merion.

In the disc event, Soilihi Boina and Nicaise Jeannet win respectively silver and bronze.

Para athletics: 1 bronze medal

In the senior women’s 1500m wheelchair race, Chelsy Élise Nacouelle from Reunion won a bronze medal.

In the men’s doubles, the pair Xavier chane fung ting and Aaron Assing won the final this Saturday in 2 sets to 1 against the Mauritians.

In cycling on the road circuit, among the women Kassandra Legros finished second and Isabelle Lebreton came third. They thus report a silver medal and an bronze medal in Reunion, Maurice wins gold.

In cycling, for men, Anthony Pothin finished 4th in the race.
