Former Canadian Olympic skater dies in car crash

Former figure skater Alexandra Paul, a 31-year-old mother, lost her life in a tragic car accident on Tuesday in Ontario.

The Barrie native was riding with her baby and three others in a vehicle traveling on a road near Melancthon Township when a transport truck entering a construction zone hit several parked cars on the road, learned CTV News.

The other occupants of the vehicle and the child were injured, but there is no fear for their lives.

Alexandra Paul and her husband, Mitch Islam, competed together at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The ice dancing duo finished 18e rank. Their record includes a silver medal won at the 2010 World Junior Championships.

The two retired from the sport in 2016 and married in 2021. They had one child, baby Charlie.

On the GoFundMe site, a kitty has been launched to help Charlie and Mitch.

“We see this fundraiser as a way to contribute to Charlie’s future and provide Mitch with essential support to weather this storm,” organizer Dustin Leigh wrote.

“As a Canadian success story is tragically cut short, we will remember Alex as a passionate and determined young woman who could light up every room she walked into. She was not only kind, educated, witty and determined, but Alex was also an example to the figure skating community having represented Canada at the Olympics. But more than anything, we will remember Alex as a loving daughter, sister, wife and mother to Charlie.”

The initial fundraising goal of $40,000 was reached in less than four hours.
