Wildfire near Cameron Lake disrupts traffic on Vancouver Island

A wildfire burning near Highway 4 on Vancouver Island, British Columbia slows traffic to and from Port Alberni, Tofino and Ucluelet.

The wildfire is approximately 109 hectares in size and is burning west of the highway near Cameron Lake, 26 kilometers east of Port Alberni. Drive BC says traffic is single-lane alternating between Cathedral Grove and MacMillian Provincial Park, and people have been warned not to stop to watch the fire.

The BC Fire Department says the blaze was reported on Saturday and is still out of control. BC Wildfire adds that teams are working on this incident and that helicopters are traveling in inaccessible areas.

The efforts of the firefighters are supported in particular by air tankers. No structures are currently threatened. This fire is in a visible high traffic area and Highway 4 may be impacted intermittently, reports BC Wildfire on his Twitter feed. According to a driver stuck in traffic, the police do not know when the road will reopen.
