Fire in a house in Laeken: five people poisoned by smoke transferred to hospital

The Brussels Fire Brigade intervened around 6:20 this morning in a three-storey house, with a café on the ground floor, located on rue Wauters in Laeken. The 112 medical services and the police from the Brussels-Capital-Ixelles zone were also on site, reports Walter Derieuw, spokesperson for the firefighters.

The alert was given by the operator of a night shop located opposite. When firefighters arrived, they discovered heavy smoke. They deployed the auto-ladder to rescue a person who indicated their presence at the window of 2th floor. Four other occupants were already outside, adds Walter Derieuw.

The fire was brought under control around 7 a.m. The five occupants of the house, slightly intoxicated by smoke, were transferred to Brugmann hospital and UZ VUB. The floors of the building are uninhabitable. Coffee, for its part, remains usable.

The origin of the incident remains to be determined. Excavation is still in progress. The damage was significant, particularly due to wooden floors.

Firefighters recall the importance of having a smoke detector (compulsory for all types of housing in the Region since January 1, 2025) and also advise avoiding, in the event of a fire, evacuating via a smokey stairwell but rather report your presence to the emergency services at the window (gestures, GSM flashlight, call 112).
