Donald Trump announces Stargate AI project, a $500 billion investment with OpenAI

A few months ago, Sam Altman was mocked by the boss of TSMC for his delusions of grandeur regarding the data centers he wanted to create to develop artificial intelligence. He seems to have found a much more attentive ear in the person of the new president of the United States of America, who has just announced the “Stargate” project led by Masayoshi Son, boss of SoftBank, as reported The Verge.

It was with an announcement at the White House that Donald Trump launched the $500 billion investment project in the future of artificial intelligence, with SoftBank (known to be the majority shareholder of ARM) as main investors. , with 88% of the shares), Oracle (leader in databases and specialized in Cloud Computing, whose boss Larry Ellison was a close friend of Steve Jobs) and OpenAI (which needs no introduction, represented by Sam Altman) .

The 47th President of the USA therefore did not delay, taking advantage of the day to at the same time remove the limitations that the previous Biden government had placed on artificial intelligence. Donald Trump also invoked the possibility of creating a “state of emergency” regarding AI, fearing that China would gain an advantage over the USA, as reported by Info.

The idea is to initially create around ten data centers reserved for artificial intelligence, of 50,000 m2 each. Of course, they will all have to be located on American territory, and managed by American companies. The first of these will be located in Texas, and all of them will have to be energy self-sufficient in one way or another.

The three core investors will be joined by other partners, including ARM, Microsoft and Nvidia, and the United Arab Emirates’ MGX investment fund will support them.

The project is planned to last over several years, with investments spread over four years. The main goals were revealed by Sam Altman, who wishes to bring about the famous “artificial general intelligence” supposed to become more intelligent than humanity, and Larry Ellison who for his part announced major developments for medicine.

If the project is substantial, Microsoft announced for its part that this did not call into question the deep links that the company has established with OpenAI, announcing that Sam Altman’s firm relied largely on Azure to operate, even if Redmond reserves the right to limit the resources it allocates to its partner.

For his part, Elon Musk does not seem to digest the announcement made by the government of which he is a part, having posted on X an angry “They don’t have the necessary money anyway”…

…before receiving a response from Sam Altman:

False, as you probably know. Want to visit the first site already under construction? This is a great thing for the country. I understand that what is great for the country is not always optimal for your businesses, but in your new role, I hope you put America First as much as possible.

Ambiance…
