A new fire broke out on Wednesday, January 22, north of Los Angeles, leading to evacuation orders in a region already shaken by devastating fires. The flames spread quickly in the area around Castaic Lake and destroyed 1,400 hectares in less than two hours.

The fire was fanned by hot, dry Santa Ana winds, which continue to blow through the area, pushing a vast cloud of smoke and embers above the flames. Evacuation orders were issued for areas around the lake, located about 50 kilometers north of Los Angeles and near the city of Santa Clarita.

Television images show police circulating in the neighborhood to encourage residents to leave their homes. Southern California has been on alert since massive fires ravaged part of Los Angeles, killing more than 27 people and destroying more than 15,000 structures.
