Why will it be possible to see six planets aligned this Tuesday, January 21 at 7 p.m.?

Exceptional phenomenon, an alignment of six planets is scheduled for this evening of Tuesday, January 21. Four of them will also be visible to the naked eye.

This is a unique show which will take place from this evening of Tuesday January 21. At sunset, six planets will be visible simultaneously and practically aligned on the same axis.

A big alignment in perspective

But as Cité de l’Espace points out, the alignment in question will not be perfect because the phenomenon is extremely rare. For the scientific cultural center of reference in astronomy, it is more of a “planetary parade”. Thus for several days, the “conditions will be ideal for seeing the planets of Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn sharing the sky over a vast panorama,” adds the theme park. Four of them will be visible in the sky with the naked eye (Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn) from East to South-West. For their part, Neptune and Uranus will be visible using a telescope or high-power binoculars.

However, pay attention to the evolution of certain stars. For example, the position of the planet Venus will change noticeably over the days. Likewise, Saturn will gradually plunge into the sunset. A crescent Moon will be added to the panorama at the end of January and beginning of February.

An alignment of seven planets on February 28!

The reason for this phenomenon is explained by the fact that these different stars, coming from the same protoplanetary disk, are in orbit around the Sun in approximately the same plane (namely the ecliptic plane).

Although the phenomenon is extremely rare, it will gain momentum on February 28 since this time, seven planets will appear on the “same line”. Mercury adding to the previously mentioned list. A major event, in this year 2025, rich in astronomical events.

We will then have to wait until 2040 to see five planets aligned again.
