-More catch-up hockey
The Canadian players fired the most dangerous shots at the start of the game. Mike Matheson hit the post to Vasilevskiy’s left, while the Lightning goaltender also frustrated Kirby Dach and Cole Caufield.
The Canadian then began to shoot himself in the foot, notably by taking penalties.
Kucherov opened the scoring at 14:20. He lobbed the puck in the Habs zone and defender Kaiden Guhle lost sight of the puck. Anthony Cirelli recovered it before leaving it behind to Kucherov, who beat Montembeault.
The Lightning widened the gap after 2:45 of play in the second period. Guentzel beat Montembeault following a pass from Michael Eyssimont from behind the net.
The Canadian scored at 5:32, on the power play. Slafkovsky threaded the needle by finding the opening between the post and Vasilevskiy on a shot from a tight angle.
This revived the Habs, who tied the game 1:49 later. Newhook moved the strings with a precise one-timer, after a pass from Laine.
The Lightning subsequently found their bearings. Guentzel missed a completely open net later in the second period, while Brayden Point hit the post after a Brendan Gallagher turnover.
Both teams started the third period strongly. In turn, Alexandre Carrier, Brandon Hagel and Slafkovsky missed scoring chances on beautiful climbs.
Montembeault made a good save late in the third period, frustrating Eyssimont on a comeback.
Evans finally broke the deadlock with 2:15 left on the clock. The Canadian then resisted the Lightning’s final assaults.
