No one can doubt Donald Trump’s very high opinion of himself. The speech he gave once sworn in as 47e President of the United States leaves no doubt on the matter.
In the face of this unscrupulous narcissist, analysts described him as the new “king”. Others, like an “emperor.” However, the speech opening his second stay at the White House sounds more like that of a self-proclaimed messiah.
He swears that, under his leadership, “America’s golden age begins now.” Nothing is more typical of messianic type speeches than the promise of a golden “rebirth” after a long crossing of the desert under “corrupt” leaders.
Victim of an assassination attempt last year, he repeated that God had “saved his life” so that he could “save” America in turn.
Accepting this divine “mission,” Trump promises Americans that they will all be prosperous. Also no more corruption and chronic childhood illnesses.
No more crime, which he only associates with newcomers. To restore security to “the streets of the cities,” he will send “millions and millions” home.
As the fundamentalist right and the white man’s nagging complaint demand, there will be only two official sexes: man and woman. Any sexual or transgender diversity will be shamed.
Peacemaker?
Donald Trump also calls himself a great “peacemaker” capable of eradicating wars. The United States will even expand its territory by sheer force of will and will plant its flag even on the planet Mars.
In short, as a blessed “beacon” of humanity, the United States, he swears to his faithful, will be respected again by the whole world.
Behind the “messiah” Trump, however, lies a less idyllic reality. Or the arrival in Washington of an authoritarian and far-right regime.
-Hence the marked presence at his swearing-in of several European politicians, deposed or not, of the same school of thought.
Hence above all, this time, the formidable cross-border propaganda machine provided by his entourage of multi-billionaires in technology and the media.
Whether it’s Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos or others, they are all equally dedicated to making their own financial interests grow along the way. Welcome to the ultimate American plutocracy.
Lost decade
Donald Trump’s power will also rest on two majority Republican chambers. A Supreme Court eager to eat out of its hand and other far-right parties on the rise elsewhere in the West.
At the start of the 21st centurye century, such an alignment of political planets favorable to the radical right up to the top of the greatest world power is unheard of.
The return of a Trump more determined than ever confirms that, started by a deadly pandemic whose after-effects will be felt for a long time to come, this decade is completely lost.
Make no mistake. Its unconditional bias for “market forces”, coupled with an assumed rejection of immigrants, feminists and minorities of all types, heralds a major social regression.
This regression does not stop at the sacrosanct borders of the USA either.
God is an Americansang our dear Jean-Pierre Ferland. For God, I don’t know. As for the devil, on the other hand… that remains to be seen.
