During the night from Saturday to Sunday, “a fire broke out on the site of the Suez Recyclage et Valorisation company which stores waste electrical and electronic equipment”, an installation classified for environmental protection, specifies the prefecture in a press release.
There were no injuries but Internet users in Lyon and its surrounding areas described a burning smell on social networks. An air quality measurement network has been deployed by the departmental-metropolitan emergency fire service (SDMIS) and “at present and after analyses, the first measurements do not indicate toxicity”, underlines the prefecture.
She adds that the fire caused significant plumes of white smoke and that olfactory nuisances could be felt in the Lyon metropolitan area. The A7 motorway was not affected by the smoke. “The fire is contained and does not threaten to spread” according to her.
