Benjamin Netanyahu demands to have “the list” of hostages available for release before any prisoner exchange

On the eve of the long-awaited truce in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli Prime Minister is increasing the pressure and demanding to have the names of the 33 hostages who can be released from this Sunday and during the 42 days of the truce. In exchange, according to Egypt, Israel will release 1,890 Palestinian prisoners.

On the eve of its entry into force, the agreement on the establishment of a truce in the fighting, the release of some of the hostages held in the Gaza Strip is experiencing its first difficulties. According to the terms of the agreement, Hamas should have transmitted this Saturday to the Israeli authorities the names of the three captives who were to be released this Sunday afternoon. This was not the case, hence Benjamin Netanyahu’s warning.

A ceasefire called into question?

Israel will not implement its own commitments until the names of these three hostages are received. Which could perhaps call into question the prospect of the ceasefire, which must in principle be respected as of this Sunday at 7:30 a.m., time.

During the 42 days of truce negotiated, 33 hostages are expected to be released, in exchange for 737 Palestinian prisoners. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Saturday that Israel was preparing to release “more than 1,890 Palestinian prisoners”.

Nervousness of Israeli services

The military and intelligence services support the deal with some nervousness, but their leaders are aware of its potential repercussions for Israeli security. Many Palestinian detainees convicted of terrorism will be released in exchange for the hostages and experts believe that most of them have not given up their desire to use violence against Israelis, both military and civilian.

The risks of fire are taken very seriously. The army chief of staff has made public a plan which provides for a considerable strengthening of the presence of IDF troops in the West Bank territories.
