“Explosion around Laeken – Neder-Over-Hembeek, observed from Avenue du Pois de Scent”Laura tells us this Saturday via the orange Alert us button. “We see a lot of smoke from the window following a noise resembling an explosion.” Selen is also worried about a “big fire in the commune of Brussels.”
Fire crews were indeed alerted at 3:27 p.m. by several calls reporting flames and an explosion in the area. Due to the scale of the first reports, a significant mobilization was quickly deployed to the scene. On site, they noticed that the damage came from the terrace of the 4th (and last) floor.
A security perimeter has been set up.
The fire was quickly brought under control by firefighters, and no injuries were reported. “We carried out an immediate ramp-up given the large number of calls and the information received. Once the situation was under control, we were able to reduce our deployment to a normal level”we are told.
-However, the material consequences are significant. Four apartments in the building are now uninhabitable due to damage caused by the explosion, fire and water infiltration. Additionally, the force of the detonation blew out the window frame of an apartment in a neighboring building. The affected residents were supported by their families, the police and municipal services.
The origin of the disaster is believed to be an explosion caused by two gas cylinders, according to initial information communicated. This incident reminds us of the importance of precautions to be taken with gas cylinders, particularly in terms of storage and use. An investigation is underway to determine the precise circumstances of the explosion.
