New surprise in the women’s draw at the Australian Open this Friday. Jessica Pegula, seeded number 7 and finalist of the last US Open, took the door in the third round against Olga Danilovic.
The Serbian, always capable of making good shots, therefore takes on the American and qualifies for the round of 16 in Melbourne for the first time in her career.
After 1h30 of play, the 23-year-old left-hander won a tight first set. Solid in her commitments, she saved the six break points she faced.
After the tie-break which she dominated seven points to three, Danilovic took off in the second to win one of the most beautiful victories of her career (7-6, 6-1).
Olga Danilovic will meet Paula Badosa for a place in the quarter-finals.
-For her part, the Spaniard, hampered by the playing conditions at the start of the day, came out after a three-set duel against Marta Kostyuk.
The two players have not faced each other since the Guadalajara tournament in 2019 and it was Danilovic who won.
For her part, Pegula, eliminated by Clara Burel in the second round of the same tournament, confirms her difficulties in Melbourne. She has in fact never made it past the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.
